Decorative Nutcrackers in the form of wooden carvings of a soldier, knight, king, or other profession have existed since at least the 15th century. These nutcrackers portray a person with a large mouth which the operator opens by lifting a lever in the back of the figurine. Originally one could insert a nut in the big-toothed mouth, press down and thereby crack the nut. Modern nutcrackers in this style serve mostly for decoration, mainly at Christmas time.
The carving of nutcrackers — as well as of religious figures and of cribs — developed as a cottage industry in forested rural areas of Germany. The most famous nutcracker carvings come from Sonneberg in Thuringia (also a center of dollmaking) and from the Ore Mountains. Wood-carving usually provided the only income for the people living there. Today the travel industry supplements their income by bringing visitors to the remote areas.
Nutcrackers have become popular in the United States as well, and a recreated "Bavarian village" even features a Nutcracker Museum. Many other materials also serve to make decorated nutcrackers, such as porcelain, silver, and brass; the museum displays samples.
Carvings by famous names like Junghanel, Klaus Mertens, Karl, Olaf Kolbe, Petersen, Christian Ulbricht and especially Steinbach nutcrackers have become collectors' items. Herr Christian Steinbach, also known as the "King of Nutcrackers", continued the family tradition of hand-carving nutcrackers. They vary greatly in price, anywhere from $100 to over $1000, depending on the collectibility factor and availability.
The name Steinbach is recognized all over the world for the unique design of their wood carved Steinbach Nutcracker creations developed many years ago by the Steinbach Family. The tradition of creating hand-carved is being continued by his daughter Karla Steinbach and granddaughter Karolin Steinbach. Karla Steinbach, Vice President of Operations, is the 6th generation to head the company. They are responsible for the product concept development, design, manufacture, and quality control at the Hohenhameln factory in the northern region of Germany.
Steinbach Nutcrackers are the most popular German Nutcrackers in the world and are handed down to future generations. The Steinbach family started making nutcrackers in the 1800's.
"To create one nutcracker," says Herr Steinbach, "can involve up to 100+ separate procedures. At one time, the curling and natural drying of the wood could take up to 2-4 years depending upon the piece."
We carry the Steinbach line of Steinbach Nutcrackers and have many pieces available. If you are starting a new collection or adding to your existing collection, you will love these unique masterpieces.
The part of the world most famous for collectible Nutcrackers is Erzebrige, a mountainous region of Germany near the border of the Czech Republic. A productive mining region since the fourteenth century, Erzebrige also developed woodcarving as an important industry. The founder of nutcracker carving in Erzebrige was Friedrich Wilhelm Fuuchtner. Around the year 1870 Fuuchtner began using a lathe to carve nutcrackers in the form of simple human figures, such as soldiers and police officers. These nutcrackers were carved from woods such as pine, beech, and alder, then painted in bright colors. The village of Seiffen where Fuüchtner made his nutcrackers remains famous for its wooden nutcrackers and toys.
We write to you with sadness of the passing of Herr Christian Steinbach on February 26, 2007. He was a great man. He died after a long illness. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. He loved to travel to the US and meet with collectors on his signing tours and was devoted to his magical nutcrackers. He will be missed by the collectors and all that met him.
He will always be remembered.
Christian's daughter Karla will continue to run the company.
Nutcrackers will now be signed by Karla and Grandaughter Karolin.
Treasure your Nutcrackers with the Christian Steinbach signature. |
